When we asked Carla for her recipe, she wrote back, “Well I knew the kugel was good...but THAT good? [Husband] Rick says you want the ‘recipe.’ If so, it'll have to be approximate. I made it with whatever veggies we had in the house!”

Carob is also known as Bokser in Yiddish or as St. John's Bread or Locust Bean. Carob is a fine Jewish tradition and part of our shared heritage from the Middle East. Carob is an indispensable part of Tu B'shevat and a fine addition to any Lag B'omer picnic. The word carat comes from the Arabic word for Carob seed because it was a uniform means of measure. "Eden learned this soup in college--her old housemate and good friend Letty used to make it weekly and sell it in the campus coffeehouse for pocket money. It's vegan and great soul food. Eden brought it to our house while we were sitting shiva this year, and I have never had better lentil soup," says sooze.
