It harkens to the idea in Judaism that there is an ideal: shel m’ala (of above), and a representation – something that tries to resemble that ideal: shel m’ata (of below).
It reminds us in this season that while there is an ideal of democracy, the democracy we deal in and muck through is often just a (sometimes messy) resemblance of that ideal. And Jewish tradition is clear: we work in the muck while trying to gain glimpses of the ideal. We deal with the way things are, trying not to despair that they are not (yet) the way we desire them to be.
As the Torah reading begins anew, let us work with this world, in the image of what it all can be, and work – and work, and work – to make that resemblance as close as can be now. To perhaps not complete the task, but not to desist from it either.
Blessings, persistence, and resilience to all us in the m'ata working toward the m'ala. May democracy increase and may the best choices be made, even when none represent our ideals most high.
Chag Simchat Torah Same'ach and Shabbat Shalom,
R’ David
