This line, adapted from Rabbi Jack Reimer, speaks directly to us in a time when Am Yisrael (the Jewish people) must continue to speak out against the actions of Medinat Yisrael (the State of Israel).
Starving people, any person of any background, is illegal, immoral, illogical, sacrilegious, unstrategic, and simply wrong.
Kadima has signed onto a campaign circulating the Jewish world: Jews for Food for People in Gaza. I have signed on individually, and I invite you to do the same. The campaign is using a quotation from the Shulchan Aruch, the preeminent halachic codex written by Sephardi scholar Rabbi Yosef Karo in northern Israel/Palestine in the 16th century. “If there is a hungry person, one must feed them.” Very simple. Donate to the Gaza Soup Kitchen here to complement raising your voice.
This week’s parasha, Emor, tells us plainly: “And when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap all the way to the edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger.” This core principle, that we understand that food is essential and must be shared and everything we have, some of it is for us to redistribute and ensure that all have food to eat. Sign on now.
Act in this small way with me today as we continue to implore an end to this terror, turning toward working for a lasting peace, encased in justice.
Shabbat shalom,
R’ David
