Chugim Offerings: Winter 2019
Chugim are an integral part of Kadima School. Hebrew for "activities," we use the word chugim to name the time during Kadima School when our young people and adults engage together in elective activities. They provide agency for our members all of all ages in their Jewish learning, journey, and community building - with opportunities to choose their desired topic of learning, or even offer something to lead themselves. Chugim are offered during Shabbat School - the first and third Saturday morning of the month - on a trimester schedule throughout the school year. The Kadima School faculty began leading chugim for young people and their families as part of Shabbat School in the fall of 2017, and since, we have opened the program to the wider Kadima community to participate in together.
These chugim are designed as intergenerational offerings that provide a chance for school families and greater Kadima membership to learn, create, and play together. We invite you to join us!

Timing: Chugim take place during the last hour of Shabbat School: 11am - 12pm on the first and third Saturdays.
Registration is required, and participation at all sessions is ideal. |

Digging Deeper Series
The Digging Deeper Series is a potpourri of offerings from Kadima membership and staff. Each community member will offer a one-hour workshop during the chug hour of Shabbat School, followed by a conversation integrated into the Torah service, happening concurrently with the following Shabbat School session. See details for specific dates, and come to one or all!
Disability Justice Text Study & Conversation What is Disability Justice? Is it just for disabled people? Who is "disabled" anyway? We will read a primary source on disability justice, and ponder the big questions, and any others that come up.

Learning about Gaza: Yoga, Clowning, & Denied Entry
Learn about the situation in Gaza and stories of the people. D'vorah will share photos and give a 'first-hand' account of her trips to Gaza with medical missions in 2015 and 2016, in which she served as yoga teacher and clown. This past October, her fellow team members returned to Gaza while her entry was denied by Israel, allegedly for "Security Reasons." Q&A and discussion will conclude the session.
De-escalation & Self-Defense Interactive Workshop In this workshop, we will learn concrete verbal deescalation and physical self defense techniques, engaging in embodied practices with partners and in groups. We'll also do some big picture thinking about what it means and why we need to be protecting ourselves and each other as we navigate the wide range of identities and experiences we each bring to the table.

It is said that after the creation of the world, God sent the angels out to deliver the souls of the people. Most of the deliveries were finished, but one angel -- new at angeling -- was carrying a very heavy sack filled with leftover souls that needed some repair. That angel got caught in a storm -- tussled and blown, completely disoriented. Struggling to return to the heavens, the angel caught the sack of leftover souls on the very tip of the tallest tree on the tip of the tallest mountain right over a place called Chelm. All the souls fell from the sack and tumbled into the valley below where you can now find the village of Chelm. And that is why every villager of Chelm is so terribly foolish -- a town full of fabulous fools!
Do you remember when Barel thought he had caught the moon in his water basin? There are so many stories of Chelm and the Chelmites. Every people have stories like these -- their most treasured silly tales -- Ashkenaz Jews have Chelm. Let's tell more Chelm stories together, act them out, and write new ones of our own! Shabbes Ritual ObjectsIn this chug we will be making Shabbat boxes to take home! They will feature physical ritual objects that we will arts-and-crafts into existence, as well as ritual words that we remember and/or create together for each ritual. If crafty creation feels like your fantastic fixation, come get artsy with me!

The Shabbat Poetry Slam
|
Have you ever wanted to write your own poem and maybe even perform it... in front of... other people?!?! If you want to learn more about poetry and performance, this is the chug for you! We will do a mix of free-write activities as well as improv/theater exercises. By the end of the chug, everyone will have created their own poem and we will perform them for each other, and perhaps even the entire Kadima school (this is optional)! We will use Jewish and social justice themes as inspiration for our pieces. We will be reading and watching some spoken word poetry. Some of the content may be related to issues of oppression, so please check in with yourself if you're able to hold space for this.

Hands On HolidaysIn this chug we will use sensory activities (playdough, water, small figures,etc.) to explore Jewish holidays. We will move through holidays our hands and bodies. We will meet in the gym at St. T's where sensory stations will be set up for young ones and grown ups to move through at their own pace.
