Five days following Yom Kippur we enter the weeklong celebration known as Sukkot, a hebrew word meaning "booths" or "huts." Sukkot is a celebration and giving of thanks of the incoming fall harvest. It also commemorates the protection G-d provided for the children of Israel when they left Egypt, and the forty years of wandering in the desert.
We celebrate Sukkot by dwelling in a foliage-covered booth, known as a Sukkah. The Sukkah is located under the open sky and typically has three walls and a roof covered with natural vegetation. During Sukkot, we try to spend as much time as we can in the Sukkah, eating meals, talking with friends, and sharing time together as a family, and as a community. By leaving the security of our homes and spending time in the Sukkah, we can demonstrate the journey we began after Yom Kippur to making our lives anew.
During Sukkot we also take the arba minim, or the Four Species. The Four Species consist of a palm branch (lulav), two willow branches (aravot), three myrtle branches (hadassim), and one citron (etrog). One of the central themes of Sukkot is unity, and the arba minim symbolize four types of people (think the four children from Passover!).. Together they represent our potential for unity, despite our differences.

Sukkot Sanctuary Ceremony and Protest @ Northwest Detention Center

Join Kadima's sanctuary committee in supporting the work of NW Detention Center Resistance by bringing our shabbat and sukkot spirit to learn, support, and resist deportation of immigrants in our region. Rabbi David will lead us in singing and ceremony around a portable yet beautiful Sukkah.
Meet us at Kadima at 1:15 pm to carpool down to Tacoma, or meet us at Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma. The Northwest Detention Center is the large, private, for-profit prison for immigrants awaiting asylum and deportation hearings. Prisoners have held numerous hunger strikes this year in protest of conditions there. Attorney General Ferguson has sued the NWDC for violation of state minimum wage law. Our presence there is extremely encouraging to the people detained. Come join us!

Join us in the sukkah followed by a potluck dinner and discussion: Reporting Back from Israel and Palestine: The Politics of Shelter. Led by participants in the 2017 delegation of the Center for Jewish Nonviolence, hear from Kadima members who participated in the politics of shelter by supporting the return of a Palestinian family to their home after more than 20 years of eviction.
