This Shabbat of Parashat Ki Tisa begins Kadima’s Spring 2023 Membership Drive. Join or rejoin Kadima to be included in this campaign to get us back to 300 individual members by Passover (evening, April 5).
Why be counted? For one (1), this week’s torah portion equates being counted with being lifted up, as well as being protected from plague. For two (2), claiming your place in Jewish community is a powerful statement against ancestral trauma and antisemitism. And claiming your place in progressive Jewish community amplifies our values throughout the wider Jewish community. For three (3), supporting Kadima financially is a righteous thing to do with your money: supporting an expansive look at Jewish identity; increasing labor, disability, racial and gender justice; claiming space for other marginalized Jews; encouraging affirming, democratic, questioning pedagogies; and creating structures for community care and support.
And like so many of us individually, Kadima has been financially impacted by the pandemic. When in the first year we ran a surplus because we suddenly spent less (not having in-person events did save us money), the excess quickly faded as the individual hardship compounded in Kadima’s bottomline. You have watched us transition staff out, in part because we could not advance them in ways they desired, and in part because we had not-enough funds to continue their position. These are some of the real impacts on our community of the economic hardships of these past few years catching up with us. We will not hide this from you.
You can view our transparent budgets here of the last 3 years. While our income has been up and then down, we know our relevance and communal need only continues to go up. Grief support; torah learning; weddings, b’mitzvah, babies, and death support; rabbinic counseling; mutual aid learning and action; shabbat; geogroups; music; wisdom; expansive belonging; and solidarity are only more in demand in this beautiful and harsh world.
We are a community worth joining. Our resilience is worth increasing. We are still here, we are not going anywhere, and three years into a global pandemic, we are reemerging with strength, conviction, wisdom, and style. Join the buzz of what is possible when we band together in being counted.
If you are reading this and you are not yet a member, join now - for only $36/year, we are a bargain. It cost Kadima more than that to send you this newsletter today, so yes, a meaningful gift on top of that helps, but start with being counted. Chip in, be counted, and may we all rise up together.
Oh, and while supplies last, we are happy to share our surplus of stylish purple Kadima tote bags with all new and returning members who join through Passover!
To lifting and being lifted,
R’ David
PS- Got a friend who is not yet a member? Time to give them a call. Friends don’t let friends miss out on Kadima. I’d be happy to be in touch with them as well.
PPS- Reading this and not yet a member (again) and this message still not enough? Be in touch and let Morgan or I know what’s holding you back from joining. We both might get something useful out of it.
